Growing Hand in Hand Wong Wai Lun, John

In response to my calling, I came to Cambodia in October 2019 to take up post of Voluntary Education Assistant in AGS, whose main duties included provision of training for local teachers and that of student counselling, in addition to assisting in the development of a vocational secondary school. The purpose of my work was to strengthen the local church and school, so as to facilitate them to participate in Bible sharing and mission work.
I have stayed in Cambodia for thirteen months, of which five months in Phnom Penh, adjusting to the new culture and learning the Khmer language, the other eight months serving in Pailin. With my two previous visits to Pailin, and ten-year teaching experience gained from serving the under-privileged students in remote mountainous areas on the Mainland under the lead of the church, I have no worries about serving in the poor and remote Pailin Province. In accepting calling for overseas ministry, I learnt obedient through my past experiences, which has helped to dispel worries about the malaria-endemic Pailin, and its comparatively backward medical services and daily living facilities. On the contrary, the clean and scenic accommodation, the friendly and nice local teaching couples living in same dormitory, the team work of fellow partners, coupled with the innocence and cuteness of primary and kindergarten students, made my day full of joy!

Through daily life and teachers’ workshops, I was deeply impressed by the amicable relations and good companionship between teachers and students. Some teachers even provide free English lessons for their school-leavers after school. Although teachers in AGS Bahuy School lag behind their counterparts in Hong Kong in areas such as teaching skills, use of computer, and English comprehension and expression, they are both open-minded and ready to learn, and have shown special interest in improving their teaching knowledge and skills. Very often, I would invite teachers to act as translators. As some of the teachers are relatively weak in English, they avoided taking the initiative in talking to me. To tackle this problem, I took the initiative to invite them, arranging translators and encouraging them to communicate in Khmer, which has really improved their active participation and communication. So far I have organized 15 teaching workshops and every time, just before and after the workshop, I would invite Christian teachers to lead the prayer.
Despite my age, qualification and working experience exceed that of school teachers in Bahuy School, my ministry in Pailin was basically a double benefit, that is, both who taught and those were taught were benefitted. To me, the preparation and teaching process was also a self-learning experience. Actually, such experience will be helpful to my preparation for the future ministry in the secondary school. I heartily enjoyed sharing teaching experience from theory to practice with teachers. My ministry in Pailin was not boring at all, instead, it was definitely a splendid Thanksgiving Journey which glorified God and empowered people in needs!
